Language explosion

So much for bilingual babies talking late! We've also made some progress on the walking front but I don't have that on video.

Got milk? Not at night...

I'd been wanting to cut out Dylan's habit of drinking milk before bed. He doesn't really need it as he eats two dinners (his at 6 p.m. and then ours around 8-ish) at night anyway including plenty of dairy products. And having milk before bed can rot teeth, of which he has seven. So this week we added a new step to the bedtime routine (brushing his teeth) and cut out the milk and he hasn't seemed to notice. Small victories, people. This is what we are thankful for. Small victories...

Where was I....?

inauguration

Mornin'

This load is not dry from SATURDAY and I need to wash and hang dark clothes today, so, you know, desperate times call for desperate measures....All of my radiators look more or less like the above. Not having a dryer means that drying clothes requires multiple steps, including strategizing, hanging and re-hanging. It's not as quick and easy as gathering up the wet load and throwing it into another appliance. I feel like I spend hours a day on this. And to add insult to injury, I then have to iron. There is nothing I hate more and am worse at (my burnt up hands attest to that) than ironing! I personally would live in perma-press but people keep giving Dylan clothing items that unless they are ironed would make him look like a homeless person or gypsy boy. Being a conscientous mother, I can't let him out of the house looking like he crawled out from the bottom of the dirty laundry basket. For his birthday back in November, Cristiano had asked to not see a drying rack or any laundry around the house just for the day. I obliged.

The state of Il Dylan at age one

He's somewhere between 23 and 24 pounds and is noticeably taller as his head now bangs the kitchen table when he stands up under it. We haven't had an official check-up in a while but we are estimating he's about 31 inches now.

Walking: He's just not that into it. Yes, he's taken a few steps. Yes, he pushes his walking toy around a bit. But he'd much rather crawl. And he's a fast and furious crawler and puller-upper. I'm not that stressed about it but Cristiano's family finds it odd as all of the kids on that side of the family walked by 10 months.

Language use: He's very verbal but tends to learn new words, practice them for a couple of days and then move on. Maybe he's storing them for future use and then will string them all together and amaze us one day. The only things he consistently says now are "no," "mamma," "papà," "nonna" (grandma), "eeya" (for "zia" - aunt) and "na na" (Luana) and "bow bow" (for dog - he goes nuts when he sees a dog outside, on TV or in books). Sometimes he says "ciao" or "bye" but he can't be bothered to do it when you want him to. He obviously tends toward the Italian but he understands both English and Italian. My confusion now with having bought some bilingual toys is that they are in British English and thus use things like "zed" for the letter "z" and "ladybird" instead of "ladybug." Do I sing along "x, y and ZED. Now I know my ABCs..." or do I sing "x, y, zee. Now I know my ABCs..." He's already living in two languages. Do I confuse him with U.S. vs. U.K. English too?

Likes: Saying the word "no." The remote control and pretty much anything else he is not supposed to touch. Taking baths and water in general. Baby Einstein DVDs. Food, specifically yogurt, pasta, bread and oranges.

Disklikes: diaper changes, clothing changes, having cream put on.

Domestic Dylan

Maybe this is a normal baby thing but Dylan seems to like all things having to do with housework. He loves the dishwasher and climbing on it while I load it. He loves clothes pins and "helping" me hang the laundry (he is scared of the spin cycle on the washer though). To my dismay, he likes to try to climb up on to the stove when I'm cooking or touch the oven when it is on. I'm thinking that in a couple of years, he's going to be pretty handy around the house, right? I'll just sit back with my feet up waiting for him to bring me a cool drink.

For Christmas we bought him his own little sink contraption so he has a place to wash his hands, brush his teeth and splash around. And to keep him off the bidet.

Dylan's very own sink.

Dylan's birthday!

Originally uploaded by michellanea

Nothing could stop the festivities! Dylan woke up with a hacking cough. Then proceeded to fall in the bathtub (my fault - he was standing and I had him only with my left hand) and bump his head, resulting in a huge knot. Then he busted his lip against Cristiano's shoulder while sneezing. All this before 10 a.m. and while the cupcakes were still baking.

Here's a video of Dylan eating his cupcake after lunch with the famiglia. His cough prevented him from eating much anything else but he managed to choke this down. The rest of the pics here. The person screaming in the video is Cristiano's aunt. She's not mad. That's just her normal talking voice. Most people in Cristiano's family talk like that.

Is this our future?

Last night Cristiano picked up pizza for us after work and he said there was a 10-year-old kid and his mom reserving the party room for a birthday party on Sunday (Big D's birthday too!). As they left the pizzeria, the kid was saying "And don't think you are coming to the party, mom. Like not even at the end. You can give me the money to pay for the pizzas and then wait for me in the car on the corner..." It got us to thinking that it only leaves us nine or so birthdays to spend with our baby before we are deemed uncool! Sigh...

Off to grate carrots for his first birthday cupcakes! I ran all over this morning finding applesauce and apple juice for the cupcakes since Italians don't use either. Germans do, apparently, because I found them in a store that sells organic German products.

What a difference a week makes...

Above, a week ago on the boat. Below, yesterday in Milan. I came home on Monday with four loads of laundry to do. It is now Thursday and load two is still drying on the rack and hanging from the rafters because, uh, nothing is going outside to flap in the sleet. I've been telling Cristiano for years that I wanted to come up with an ecological clothes dryer operated by a Stairmaster, bicycle or elliptical machine. He'd be the engineering mind behind it. He did some calculations and told me that an exercise machine could not generate enough power and I'd have to cycle or Stairmaster for a few days just to dry one load. Having dry laundry would be the perfect incentive to work out, right? I'd be slim AND wearing dry, wrinkle-free, non-musty smelling clothing. Well, of course, I saw on CNN yesterday that someone has "stolen" my idea. If only Cristiano had listened to me and we'd made it happen!

La Befana came!

La Befana came last night while we were sleeping. She left us all candy in our stockings. This was one of my due dates (some calculations said Jan. 6, others said Jan. 7) last year, and I was truly glad when the day came and went and Dylan was not born on a children's holiday featuring an old witch. His birthday may have been overshadowed by the stockings and candy. And the ugly hag.

Here's my Befana stocking

Why did I get (candy) coal in my stocking? Is it because I am back to waking up every hour?

Another surprise this morning...And to think that just a few days ago, we were in short sleeves on the deck of the boat as we sailed near sunny Africa!

Cabin fever

So, we are still on our cruise (we roll into the port of Genoa on Monday morning at 9 a.m.) and we have been having a good time. That is up until my two cabin mates got sick last night. Dylan has pharyngitis and Cristiano has tonsillitis. I know this because we went to the ship medical center this morning, and they both got antibiotics. I've been playing nurse, dispensing pain relievers and passing the Kleenex. No day trip to Rome for us tomorrow. We will be staying on board. It's a pity too because tomorrow looks to be a beautiful day and we were a bit unlucky with the weather during the other excursions. It poured in Barcelona, it rained off and on in Lisbon and it rained for half of our time in Malaga. In every place we went to people told us "Yesterday it was sunny and 80!" It has been pretty warm everywhere though - to the point that the Germans and British swim in the outdoor pools on the ship. The Italians, of course, are fearful of catching a draft and only swim in the indoor pools. I hope Dylan's fever breaks soon (has been hovering at around 101.5 all day though I've been giving him Baby Tylenol every four hours) and that neither illness attacks me. Oh well. At least we are having some nice family bonding cozy cozy in our cabin!
