Pre- Pre- Potty Training

I just started reading the No-Cry Potty Training Solution in an effort to plant the seeds for what the author calls "potty learning" since it's really all about how good the teachers are. No pressure! We are sleep training dropouts, and I used to console myself with the fact that even if my kid goes to bed late, sleeps with us and wakes us multiple times throughout the night, at least he was a good eater. Now as we've entered toddlerhood, he's become a picky eater and eats maybe one square meal a day. He even hates his morning bottle of milk anymore. If it's not pasta, pizza, risotto or yogurt, he won't touch it. And even then, there's no guarantee. Last night, I made broccoli cheese soup, and he had a fit. I had to heat up some pizza or he wouldn't have eaten anything. I know I'm supposed to just let him go hungry, but I can't do it.

Anyway, that's why we've got to be potty training superstars! According to the quiz I took in the book, Dylan could potentially be ready. But the author says that the longer you wait, the more you have a guarantee that they are indeed physiologically and psychologically ready. And I'm nothing if not a practical girl. I'm not starting ANYTHING that requires tons of laundry and clean-ups right now. We had a few vomiting incidents on Monday and Tuesday that I'm still digging myself out from laundry-wise. I'm thinking February would be a good time. He will have just turned two and the weather will (if I'm lucky) start to be warm enough again where I can at least hang things outside and not have them draped from the rafters in here. Which is why we are pre- pre- potty training (letting him watch us go to the bathroom, having him "discover" on his own that there's a new kind of potty in town and get curious about it - the author says that even if he wants to play with it or wear it on his head for a few months, that's OK!) now. There will be no pictures.

well that is a shame about the pictures, i'm sure everyone would just love to see them.

I found toilet training the easiest thing so far as S just decided when she was 2 (day after her BD in July so hot weather)that she would use the potty. SO i took ehr nappies off. The first day was a disaster and she had lots of accidents, mainly because of the novelty and also becuase she could not be bothered going to the potty. The next day i offered her 'incentives' (OK sweets) for every time she used the potty. Since then she pretty much used it every time. Absolutely no hassle at all to me, as i guess she was ready for it.

It was pretty hard travelling etc after that though, as when they are used to nappies they can't hold on for long. Luckily we had a portable potty that fit into my bag which came in handy quite a few times (in the car, at the beach, roadside etc).

No, Vanessa, there will be no photos of Dylan watching us go to the bathroom. :)

According to the book (I know I rely on books too much - I'm a freak that way), potty training in one day is practically unprecedented. Or she says that the programs that claim to do it in one day are kind of full of it because kids make strides then regress, etc. She said in reality it takes anywhere from three months to one year. After the day I had today cooped up in the house sick myself with a sniffly yet rambunctious toddler, the last thing I can think of is embarking on some big new project like potty training...

I am a big 'the book said' person too. So i'd believe what she said about no one day wonders, however it was totally hassle free in my case. The hassle came afterwards with learning to whip out the portable potty at a moment's notice (usually for no. 2s...), so i guess it depends on your 'definition' of potty trained. We occasionally had an accident but really, less than once a month or so when she was busy and tired. However she still wears nappies to bed, more than a year after not having them in the day. We have tried a few times to remove them, but she is still not ready as she hasn't had any dry nights, ever. For sure no 'one day wonder' there! Does your pre pre book have any info about night training?

I'm relieved to hear there will be no pictures! I haven't even thought that far ahead ... potty training, yay! My friend took a year to potty train her little girl ... but she used the Gina Ford method.

We're also disappearing under a mountain of laundry, though I have to say that today we had good drying weather. Who'd have thought I'd ever care much about good drying weather, but I do, intensely.

Hope the paperwork for the move is progressing nicely!

Vanessa,
She does go into the night potty training thing but I'm not to that chapter yet. She says that biologically they can't be expected to stay dry at night until much later than when daytime potty training begins. She seems to criticize people who push potty training (says it is physically impossible at, say, one year and people who say their kids are potty trained at one year are full of it and are merely sitting the kid on the toilet about once an hour and calling that "potty trained") too early.

Kerstin,
I had one of Gina Ford's books though not for potty training. I think it was for sleep. I found her too harsh and regimented. If I had followed her schedules, I think I would have gone into an insane asylum. Every millisecond of your day was accounted for (even things like "Now while baby is down, go wash the bottles...") in a way that did not seem healthy and made you a prisoner in your house. And knowing what I know about my son now, I don't think he would have thrived with her method.

Having said that, you've got a while before you need to think about it. Even I want to wait a bit, but I'm glad I started reading because there are some physiological things I didn't know. So far, this seems more like an informative book and not a step-by-step thing. Unlike sleep training, potty training should be "fun" apparently...

Oh and Vanessa, I'd share the book with you but I downloaded it on my iPod Touch so I can't send it. :) Though if you had an iPhone or iPod Touch, I could share it that way.
